Augmented Painting

Augmented Painting is a new ontological category in contemporary art created by Perceptrum². It defines a form of painting in which a physical painted surface is extended through sensing technologies and artificial intelligence, enabling interactive, adaptive, and networked behaviours driven by memory and machine learning.

The concept is derived from the broader class of Augmented Physical Objects and finds its first instantiated artwork in Sounding Canvas, a networked interactive painting system that transforms touch into sound and computational response.

The Birth of Augmented Painting

At the end of 2024, Perceptrum launched their flagship project: Sounding Canvas. They introduced a “third state of painting” beyond contemplation or passive digital immersion, embedding capacitive sensing, adaptive algorithms, and machine learning directly into tactile surfaces.

What distinguishes their work is not only that paintings produce sound, but that they develop memory. Repeating the same gesture does not produce identical results: each interaction is shaped by prior touch history, speed, pressure, and intention, creating a living, non-linear dialogue between human and system.

Connecting Through Networked Paintings

In 2025, Perceptrum expanded into networked installations, connecting multiple Sounding Canvases across different locations. A gesture performed on one canvas can influence another elsewhere, transforming isolated artworks into a distributed sensory system where distant participants communicate through touch and sound.

Expanding Into Space

This research eventually extended into performance environments with Sounding Stage, where entire architectural spaces become instruments. Floors and vertical surfaces respond to movement, proximity, and gesture history, turning performers into co-authors of an evolving sonic environment.

The work of Perceptrum remains an ongoing exploration of perception, memory, and human relation, where art and technology merge into systems that learn how to listen.
