Entangled Variations

One artwork, existing through relationships between distant places.

Entangled Variations is a distributed artwork by Perceptrum² connecting distant exhibition spaces through a network of Augmented Paintings.

The project is not conceived as two separate exhibitions linked together by technology. It is one artwork whose existence emerges through the relationship between the places, the paintings, and the people inhabiting them.

A medium, a proposition, a practice

The medium

Augmented Painting

Perceptrum² develops Augmented Painting as an artistic medium: paintings extended through sensing, computation, sound, artificial intelligence, and networked interaction.

The curatorial proposition

Relationship

The artwork is not reduced to an autonomous object. It becomes an interlocutor, and meaning emerges through relationships between people, paintings, places, and communities.

The curatorial practice

Connected Exhibitions

Perceptrum² realizes this proposition through connected exhibitions: exhibition spaces become parts of a single artistic situation rather than independent venues.

One artwork, two places

In Entangled Variations, the distance between exhibition spaces becomes part of the artwork itself. Paintings situated in different places are coupled through their interactions, allowing events occurring in one location to become part of the experience of another.

The connection is therefore not simply a technical layer added to an exhibition. It is part of the work's artistic structure: the artwork exists in the relationship between otherwise distant situations.

Italy

Pescara

Spazio Matta becomes one node of the distributed artwork, hosting a group of Sounding Canvases whose interactions participate in the larger network.

Spain

Barcelona

Barcelona becomes the second node, allowing another group of Sounding Canvases to participate in the same distributed artistic situation.

Sounding Canvas

The project develops the principles established by Sounding Canvas , the first body of work developed within Perceptrum². Each canvas combines painting with embedded sensing, computation and sound, becoming responsive to the tactile presence of its visitors.

Within Entangled Variations, however, the individual canvas is only one component of a larger relational structure. Its significance is expanded by its connection to other canvases situated elsewhere.

Variation through connection

The title Entangled Variations refers to the way individual works can remain distinct while participating in a shared system of transformation.

Each painting retains its own visual and sonic identity. Yet interaction with one work can produce consequences elsewhere, creating relationships between gestures, sounds, spaces, and participants.

The result is neither a collection of autonomous works nor a single homogeneous installation. It is a network of variations whose identity emerges through connection.

From painting to relationship

Perceptrum² approaches the painting not simply as an image to be observed, but as a surface capable of entering into a relationship with its surroundings.

Through Augmented Painting, touch becomes an event, sound becomes a response, and distance becomes a condition for connection. The exhibition therefore becomes a space in which relationships are not merely represented but materially enacted.

We develop Augmented Painting as a medium, use relationship as a curatorial proposition, and realize it through connected exhibitions.
